A Brief Insight Into The History Of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a great occasion that gives you a reason to smile and an opportunity to get together or reunite with your family and friends. The occasion is not just all about thanking each other. The true spirit of the Thanksgiving Day lies in sharing love and respect with each other. You show your gratitude to others for their kindness. You participate in the parties hosted by others, bring gifts for each other, and spend some quality time with your family and friends that eventually helps you share and bond in a better way.

 

Thanksgiving and Ancient Greeks
The history of the Thanksgiving Day dates back to centuries ago. At present, it might be considered a popular American festival, but its roots lie in ancient Greece. The people of ancient Greece had the belief that all the good things that they get from land are the result of the blessings of the gods and goddesses that they worship. As a gesture of thanking for those blessings, they used to celebrate a festival called Thesmophoria every year at harvest time.

Sukkot is a Thanksgiving type festival that is still celebrated by the Hebrews. It is also known as the Festival of Booths. It is an eight-day festival celebrated by giving thanks and tithes of the harvest.

You can find the history of Thanksgiving type festivals in the Roman culture as well. The festival of the Cerelia is celebrated every October in Rome. This festival is mainly celebrated to thank Goddess Ceres. In this festival, the people of Rome bring offerings of fruit and grain to the temple of Ceres.

Thanksgiving in America     
The idea of Thanksgiving in America is also about sharing food and giving thanks not only to other people but also to God. The festival is mainly known as Turkey Day because of the main food – turkey.

Food is the necessity of life and it is the base for these types of festivals all around the world. People in different parts of the world celebrate Thanksgiving under different names.
